Accelerator (Batch 21)
Berkeley SkyDeck's Accelerator program offers a $200,000 investment and access to a vast network for 20-25 startups from around the world.
About This Program
History and Founding Story
Berkeley SkyDeck, deeply rooted in the innovation ecosystem of the University of California, Berkeley, was established to bridge the gap between groundbreaking academic research and successful commercial ventures. Leveraging the university's vast intellectual capital and entrepreneurial spirit, SkyDeck has evolved into a premier global accelerator, attracting startups from around the world to its unique program. While the specific founding date isn't detailed, its strong affiliation with UC Berkeley underscores its mission to foster innovation and support the next generation of global entrepreneurs.
Mission and Values
SkyDeck's core mission is to accelerate promising startups by providing them with critical resources, mentorship, and investment. The program is industry-agnostic, reflecting a commitment to fostering innovation across all sectors. A key value is inclusivity, evidenced by its strong focus on UC-affiliated companies and international startups, with historically about two-thirds of selected companies originating outside the US. SkyDeck aims to create a diverse and dynamic cohort, ensuring a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives.
Program Structure and Timeline
The Berkeley SkyDeck Accelerator operates on a six-month acceleration cycle. Approximately 20-25 selected Cohort teams receive a $200,000 investment from the Berkeley SkyDeck Fund. These teams engage in mandatory sessions, are matched with a dedicated Lead Advisor, and are provided with designated workspace at SkyDeck. The program culminates in a highly anticipated Demo Day, where Cohort teams present to over 900 investors. Additionally, 60-80 selected Pad-13 teams gain access to many of the same resources, though without the guaranteed fund investment or the full mentorship program, and they do not pitch at Demo Day. However, the Berkeley SkyDeck Fund retains the option to invest in Pad-13 teams that raise an institutional round, matching up to 10% of that round on the same terms as other investors.
Mentorship and Network
A cornerstone of the SkyDeck experience is its extensive network. Startups gain access to over 900 SkyDeck Advisors, providing invaluable guidance and industry insights. The program facilitates connections through weekly roundtables, workshops, and events. Beyond direct mentorship, SkyDeck leverages a suite of dedicated business development resources, connecting startups to potential customers through its industry partner network and the vast Berkeley Alumni Network, which comprises 613,000 living alumni. This robust network is crucial for strategic partnerships, customer acquisition, and fundraising.
Investment Terms
Cohort teams receive a $200,000 investment from the Berkeley SkyDeck Fund. For Pad-13 teams, while there isn't an initial guaranteed investment, the Berkeley SkyDeck Fund has the option to invest in those that successfully raise an institutional round. This investment can be up to 10% of that round, on the same terms as other investors, providing a significant follow-on funding opportunity.
What Makes it Unique
SkyDeck's uniqueness stems from its deep integration with UC Berkeley, offering unparalleled access to academic talent, research, and a global alumni network. Its dual-track program (Cohort and Pad-13) provides varying levels of engagement and investment opportunities, catering to a broader range of early-stage companies. The strong emphasis on international startups and UC-affiliated ventures further distinguishes it, creating a truly global and diverse entrepreneurial environment. The sheer scale of its advisor network and in-kind resources also sets it apart.
What Participants Can Expect Day-to-Day
Participants in the Cohort program can expect a rigorous and immersive six-month experience. Days will likely involve working from designated SkyDeck workspaces, attending mandatory sessions and workshops, and engaging in regular meetings with their Lead Advisor. There will be frequent opportunities to network with other founders, advisors, and industry experts at weekly roundtables and events. Startups will also be actively leveraging the provided in-kind resources and business development support to refine their product, acquire customers, and prepare for Demo Day. Pad-13 teams will have similar access to resources and events, though without dedicated workspace or the same intensive mentorship structure.
