Black Orlando Tech
Black Orlando Tech (BOT) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a thriving and inclusive technology ecosystem in Central Florida, specifically empowering Black entrepreneurs and professionals. Founded in 2017 by Dennis Kennedy, BOT emerged from a recognized need to address the underrepresentation of Black individuals in the local tech scene and to provide resources, community, and opportunities for growth. Their mission is to connect, educate, and empower the Black tech community, driving innovation and economic development.
While not a traditional venture capital firm or accelerator with a direct investment thesis in the financial sense, Black Orlando Tech acts as a crucial incubator and community builder. They focus on human capital and ecosystem development, providing pathways for founders to connect with investors, mentors, and resources. Their programs are designed to upskill individuals, support early-stage startups, and create a strong network. Notable programs include regular meetups, workshops, pitch competitions, and mentorship initiatives. They also host an annual Black Orlando Tech Week, a significant event that brings together founders, investors, and tech enthusiasts.
Geographically, their focus is squarely on Orlando and the broader Central Florida region. They aim to elevate the local tech landscape by ensuring it is diverse and equitable. While they don't have a direct investment portfolio, their impact is seen in the numerous startups that have emerged from their community, gained visibility, and subsequently secured funding from other sources. What makes Black Orlando Tech stand out is its deep commitment to community building, its focus on addressing systemic inequalities within the tech sector, and its role as a vital bridge between aspiring Black tech professionals and the resources needed to succeed.
