CREATE-X (Georgia Tech)
CREATE-X is an initiative at Georgia Institute of Technology designed to instill an entrepreneurial mindset in students and help them launch successful startups. It was founded in 2014 by Georgia Tech with a significant initial gift from Chris Klaus, a Georgia Tech alumnus and successful entrepreneur. The core mission of CREATE-X is to provide Georgia Tech students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to create their own ventures, fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within the university community. Their investment thesis is primarily focused on early-stage, student-led startups emerging from Georgia Tech's diverse academic disciplines. They are sector-agnostic, supporting a wide range of technologies and business models, from software and hardware to biotech and consumer products, as long as they are founded by Georgia Tech students or recent alumni.
CREATE-X runs several notable programs, including 'Startup Launch,' a highly competitive summer program that provides seed funding (typically $20,000 convertible notes), mentorship, and educational resources to student teams building their companies. Another key program is 'Idea to Prototype (I2P),' which offers grants and support for students to develop initial prototypes of their innovative ideas. They also offer 'Startup Lab,' an academic course that teaches entrepreneurial fundamentals. The geographic focus is inherently tied to Georgia Tech, primarily supporting ventures originating from the Atlanta, Georgia ecosystem. While specific portfolio highlights are numerous and constantly evolving, many CREATE-X alumni companies have gone on to raise significant follow-on funding and achieve successful exits, demonstrating the program's effectiveness in nurturing high-potential startups. What makes CREATE-X stand out is its deep integration within a top-tier research university, providing founders access to cutting-edge technology, world-class faculty expertise, and a vast network of alumni and industry professionals, all while offering non-dilutive or founder-friendly capital at the earliest stages.
