About This Program
About the Black Community Wealth Accelerator
The Black Community Wealth Accelerator, offered by Start.coop, is a specialized program designed to empower Black-led cooperatives in the United States and Canada. The accelerator's core mission is to foster sustainable business and ownership models that generate true impact within Black communities. It leverages Start.coop's proprietary "Lean Co-op methodology" to guide participants through a rigorous 12-week curriculum.
Program Structure and Timeline
The accelerator runs for 12 weeks, typically from September to December. Key dates for the Fall 2025 cohort include applications opening on May 19, 2025, and closing on June 18, 2025. Interviews are conducted in July, with decisions made by August 8, 2025. The program officially commences on September 4, 2025, and concludes on December 5, 2025. The curriculum is structured around weekly workshops, each with hands-on activities, covering essential aspects of cooperative development and business growth. Topics include cooperative purpose, facilitative leadership, decision-making and governance, legal frameworks, revenue generation strategies, sales funnel building, and storytelling through pitch decks.
Mentorship and Support
Participants benefit from a robust support system. This includes eight one-on-one business coaching sessions with an established cooperative developer, providing personalized guidance and expertise. The program also emphasizes peer connection, fostering a supportive cohort environment where entrepreneurs can collaborate and learn from each other. Additionally, participants gain access to on-demand modules from Start.coop's online curriculum, allowing for flexible learning.
Investment and Perks
Each participating cooperative receives a $5,000 grant to support their development. Beyond financial assistance, the accelerator offers significant practical benefits. These include discounted access to curated platform services and business management tools such as legal, accounting, CRM, and marketing solutions, designed to save time and money during the critical startup phase.
What Makes It Unique
The Black Community Wealth Accelerator stands out for its specific focus on Black-led cooperatives and its commitment to both business sustainability and community impact. The program's "Lean Co-op methodology" is tailored to the unique needs of cooperative enterprises, emphasizing validation of both business and governance models. The generous support from organizations like the Truist Foundation enables the provision of grants and comprehensive resources, making the program accessible and impactful.
Participant Experience
Day-to-day, participants can expect to engage in weekly workshops that combine theoretical learning with practical application. They will work closely with their dedicated business coach, refine their cooperative's governance and business models, and develop concrete plans for revenue growth and sales. The collaborative cohort environment encourages networking and shared learning, while access to on-demand resources provides flexibility.
