About This Program

The CivStart Accelerator: Scaling GovTech Solutions

The CivStart Accelerator, in partnership with the National League of Cities, is a unique 12-month program designed to bridge the gap between innovative govtech startups and the complex state and local government market. Established with the mission to foster technological advancement in public service, CivStart aims to empower entrepreneurs to develop and scale solutions that address critical governmental needs.

Mission and Values

CivStart's core mission is to facilitate the growth of govtech startups by providing them with unparalleled access to market intelligence, strategic networks, and expert guidance. The program values active participation, community building among cohort members, and a commitment to adaptation and innovation. By fostering a collaborative environment, CivStart ensures that startups are not only equipped to succeed but also contribute to a vibrant ecosystem of public sector innovation.

Program Structure and Timeline

The CivStart Accelerator is a comprehensive 12-month program. It emphasizes continuous engagement through monthly strategy meetings, curriculum sessions, and participation in CivStart’s annual Demo Day and Innovation Summit. The program culminates in the State of GovTech Pitchfest, where startups present their solutions to a wide audience of public and private sector attendees, competing for pilot opportunities. For 2025, CivStart has eliminated participation fees for pre-seed startups, making the program accessible to a broader range of promising entrepreneurs.

Mentorship and Network

Participants gain access to an extensive network of resources. This includes CivStart’s Advisory Board, comprised of seasoned professionals who offer tailored mentorship, virtual learning opportunities, and office hours. The program also facilitates direct government engagement through "GovTalks," focus groups, and conference attendance, connecting startups with public-sector "Govtech Champions" who provide feedback and support. Furthermore, startups can tap into CivStart’s Venture Partner Network for investment opportunities and strategic partnerships.

What Makes it Unique

CivStart stands out due to its deep focus on the state and local government market. It provides specialized market intelligence, helping startups understand budgetary priorities, key stakeholders, and upcoming opportunities. The program's commitment to hands-on consulting assists startups in navigating complex procurement processes. The partnership with the National League of Cities further solidifies its unique position in connecting startups directly with government entities.

What Participants Can Expect Day-to-Day

Startups in the CivStart Accelerator can expect a dynamic and engaging experience. Daily activities may include participating in on-demand and live govtech curriculum sessions led by government leaders and industry experts, engaging in tailored mentorship sessions, and collaborating with fellow cohort members.
