About This Program

About Start.coop and the Accelerator

Start.coop is dedicated to fostering the growth of cooperative businesses, particularly those led by Black entrepreneurs. The organization's mission is rooted in the belief that cooperative models can drive sustainable business growth and create significant community impact. The Fall 2025 Accelerator for Black Community Wealth is a testament to this commitment, offering a structured program designed to elevate Black-led cooperatives to their "next level." The program leverages Start.coop's proprietary Lean Co-op methodology, a framework specifically tailored to help participants build robust business and ownership models.

Program Structure and Timeline

The Fall 2025 Accelerator spans 12 intensive weeks, running from September 4 to December 5, 2025. The program is meticulously structured to guide participants through critical stages of business development. Each week features workshops focusing on essential skills and knowledge, complemented by hands-on activities. Key topics covered include validating business and cooperative governance models, developing traction for sustainability, building sales and revenue growth plans, exploring financing options, and refining storytelling through pitch decks. The application window opens on May 19, 2025, and closes on June 18, 2025, followed by interviews in July and decisions made by August 8, 2025.

Mentorship, Coaching, and Network

Participants in the Accelerator receive comprehensive support, including eight 1:1 business coaching sessions with an established cooperative developer. This personalized guidance ensures that each cooperative addresses its unique challenges and opportunities. Beyond individual coaching, the program emphasizes peer connection, fostering a supportive cohort environment where values-aligned entrepreneurs can collaborate and learn from one another. This network extends beyond the program, creating a lasting community of cooperative leaders.

Investment and Perks

Thanks to generous support, including from the Truist Foundation, each participating cooperative receives a $5,000 grant. This direct financial support is a significant boost for early-stage cooperatives. In addition to funding, the program offers a suite of valuable perks: weekly workshops, 1:1 business coaching, peer connection opportunities, access to on-demand modules from Start.coop's online curriculum, and curated discounts on essential platform services and business management tools (e.g., legal, accounting, CRM, marketing). These benefits are designed to save participants time and money during the critical startup phase.

What Makes It Unique and Participant Experience

The Start.coop Accelerator stands out due to its specific focus on Black-led cooperatives and its tailored Lean Co-op methodology. The program's curriculum is not just theoretical; it's designed for practical application, with workshops like "Your Cooperative Purpose," "Facilitative Leadership," "Decision Making & Governance," and "Finding Your North Star" directly addressing the unique needs of cooperative businesses. Participants can expect a dynamic day-to-day experience filled with interactive workshops, dedicated coaching sessions, and collaborative peer activities. The program culminates in refining their pitch deck, preparing them to effectively communicate their co-op's story to various audiences and secure future growth.
