About This Program
History and Mission
The VentureWell Ocean Enterprise Accelerator is a groundbreaking initiative designed to propel the future of the blue economy by fostering innovation in ocean data technologies and services. Partnering with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), VentureWell aims to support the development, commercialization, and adoption of new ocean solutions for both economic and societal benefit to the U.S. The program's mission is to empower a diverse range of innovators—from students and researchers to entrepreneurs and industry professionals—to transform bold ideas into impactful, market-ready solutions that strengthen the U.S. ocean economy.
Program Structure and Timeline
The accelerator offers a multi-stage approach to venture development. The core offering, Stage 1, is an intensive seven-week virtual program culminating in a three-day in-person workshop. For the Spring 2026 cohort, virtual training is scheduled from April 22 to June 10, 2026, followed by in-person sessions from June 16-18, 2026, hosted at the University of Rhode Island Bay Campus in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Office hours extend through July 22, 2026, providing continued support. An optional Stage 0 program serves as an entry point for those new to commercialization, offering three half-day virtual workshops to introduce lean startup methodology, networking, and funding options. Stage 0 is not a prerequisite for Stage 1 but is recommended for early-stage innovators.

Participants in the Ocean Enterprise Accelerator gain access to an unparalleled network of resources. This includes expert coaches, industry leaders, and NOAA researchers, all dedicated to guiding ventures through their development journey. The program emphasizes personalized coaching and provides opportunities to network with peers and domain experts in ocean-related fields. This robust support system is crucial for refining business models, conducting intensive technical development analysis, and preparing for the next stages of venture growth.
Investment Terms and Funding
Ventures successfully completing Stage 1 receive $15,000 in Technology Development and Commercialization (TDC) awards. The accelerator offers a comprehensive pipeline of future programming, with the potential for startups to receive a cumulative $140,000 in direct awards per team across all stages. Additionally, the program includes access to a technical assistance fund, providing further support services to help innovators realize their full potential.
