About This Program

Summer Accelerator: Launching Scalable Companies at Cal Poly CIE

The Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) Summer Accelerator is a premier program meticulously designed to empower Cal Poly students and recent alumni with the essential tools, funding, and mentorship needed to transform innovative ideas into real, scalable companies. Housed in the vibrant downtown San Luis Obispo CIE HotHouse, this accelerator embodies Cal Poly's commitment to fostering entrepreneurial leaders who create significant economic and social value.

Mission and Values

The core mission of the Summer Accelerator is to cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurs by providing a structured yet dynamic environment. It values hands-on learning, practical application, and a strong community ethos. The program aims to instill a deep understanding of business fundamentals, encourage iterative development, and equip founders with the storytelling skills necessary to attract investment and customers.

Program Structure and Timeline

The Summer Accelerator runs for 10 weeks, specifically from June 15, 2026, to August 21, 2026. Throughout this intensive period, participating companies engage in a comprehensive curriculum. Weekly workshops cover critical aspects of business development, while guest speakers from various sectors of the startup world share invaluable insights and experiences. A key component is the emphasis on developing a robust business model, understanding operational intricacies, and refining their pitch. The program culminates in a final presentation, allowing teams to showcase their progress and potential.

Mentorship and Network

A cornerstone of the Summer Accelerator is its hands-on mentorship. Founders receive personalized guidance from experienced mentors who help navigate the challenges of launching a startup. While specific mentor names are not listed, the program's affiliation with the CIE and its focus on practical application suggest a strong network of industry professionals and successful entrepreneurs. This network extends beyond direct mentorship, offering participants connections within the broader startup ecosystem.

Investment Terms

Each participating team in the Summer Accelerator receives $10,000 in seed funding. This capital is provided to help founders kickstart their business development, cover initial expenses, and build out their product or service. The program does not specify any equity taken in exchange for this funding, suggesting it functions as a grant to support student and alumni ventures.

What Makes It Unique

The Summer Accelerator stands out due to its exclusive focus on Cal Poly students and recent alumni, fostering a strong sense of community and tailored support. The combination of significant seed funding, intensive workshops, expert guest speakers, and dedicated hands-on mentorship within a 10-week timeframe provides a potent launchpad. The requirement for co-founders to be full-time participants and present in San Luis Obispo ensures deep engagement and collaboration.

What Participants Can Expect Day-to-Day

Participants can expect a highly immersive and demanding experience. Days will likely involve a mix of structured workshops, one-on-one mentorship sessions, independent work on their business model and product development, and networking opportunities. The environment is collaborative, encouraging peer learning and support. Founders will continuously refine their business strategies, practice their pitches, and receive direct feedback, all while working towards the goal of launching a real, scalable company by the program's end.
