About This Program

Program Overview and Mission

The Techstars Healthcare Accelerator powered by Permanente Medicine Mid-Atlantic States is a distinctive program crafted for visionary entrepreneurs dedicated to transforming healthcare delivery. This accelerator's core mission is to foster solutions that enhance patient outcomes, reduce costs, and improve care experiences across diverse populations, particularly within a value-based care framework. It represents a powerful collaboration between Techstars, a global leader in startup acceleration, and the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG), an award-winning collective of 1,800 physicians spanning over 60 medical specialties and nearly 300 staff professionals. MAPMG serves as the exclusive care provider for Kaiser Permanente in the Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland region, offering an unparalleled opportunity for startups to engage with a large, integrated healthcare system.

Program Structure and Timeline

The accelerator operates as an intensive, 3-month, in-person program. The application window for the 2026 cohort opens on March 2nd, 2026, with a final deadline for applications on June 10th, 2026. The program officially commences on September 14th, 2026, culminating in a Demo Day on December 9th, 2026. This structured timeline ensures a focused and rigorous development period for participating companies.

Mentorship and Network

A cornerstone of the Techstars model, this program provides extensive mentorship. Founders receive guidance and support from both Techstars' vast network and the clinical and operational experts within MAPMG. This dual mentorship approach offers startups unique insights into both entrepreneurial growth and the complexities of the healthcare industry. Participants gain access to Techstars' world-class network of investors, mentors, and alumni, fostering connections that can be pivotal for long-term success.

Investment Terms and Benefits

Each company selected for the accelerator receives a significant investment of $220,000. Beyond the direct capital, participants benefit from over $2 million worth of perks from Techstars' partners, which can include software credits, legal services, and other essential startup resources. A key differentiator of this program is the potential for pilot opportunities with Permanente Medicine. Startups are encouraged to develop solutions that can meaningfully advance care across MAPMG's extensive specialties and institutes, with a strong emphasis on solutions that can be integrated and tested within their system.

Core Themes and Focus Areas

The program is particularly interested in solutions addressing six core themes, representing areas where innovative solutions can have the greatest impact on care delivery, access, and outcomes:

  • Administration of Care: Streamlining systems to allow physicians and care teams to focus more on patients.

  • Friction Reduction: Designing simple, equitable, and consistent access to care.

  • Building Trust in Clinical Care: Strengthening trust among patients, physicians, care teams, and supporting technologies.

  • Women’s Health: Closing care gaps for conditions uniquely affecting women.

  • Care at Home: Expanding safe and convenient home-based care to improve outcomes and affordability.

  • Chronic Care and Aging: Advancing long-term management of chronic conditions and supporting healthy aging.

What Participants Can Expect Day-to-Day

Participants can expect an immersive and demanding experience. Days will be filled with workshops, one-on-one mentorship sessions, product development, and strategic planning. The in-person format facilitates deep collaboration with mentors, fellow founders, and the MAPMG team. Regular check-ins, feedback loops, and opportunities to refine business models and product offerings are integral to the daily routine.
