About This Program

History and Founding Story

The UpTide Accelerator is an initiative of the 92NY's Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact. Leveraging the extensive expertise and network of 92NY, the Belfer Center, and SEED SPOT, UpTide was established to address the critical "Crisis of Community" – a growing sense of disconnection and disaffiliation that underpins many societal challenges. The accelerator aims to empower community-building nonprofits by providing them with the essential tools, strategies, and funding needed to significantly scale their impact and foster stronger, more connected communities.

Mission and Values

UpTide's core mission is to fuel the growth of community-building nonprofits. It is deeply committed to combating the "Crisis of Community" by supporting organizations whose missions and programming directly address this societal challenge. The accelerator values impact, scalability, and strategic growth, striving to equip nonprofit leaders with the capabilities to not only sustain but also expand their positive influence within their communities. The program emphasizes a collaborative approach, fostering a strong network among cohort peers, mentors, coaches, and industry leaders.

Program Structure and Timeline

The UpTide Accelerator operates on a hybrid model, combining virtual sessions with a crucial in-person component. The program culminates in a "Week in New York City," which includes intensive programming, opportunities for partner meetings, and a highly anticipated Showcase Day. During this week, all flights, hotel accommodations, and most meals are covered by UpTide. Participants are required to attend all virtual sessions, the NYC Week, and Showcase Day to be eligible for the full benefits, including the initial grant. The program is designed to guide nonprofit leaders through a structured process of strategic planning and organizational development, leading to a customized 3-year strategic plan for scaling impact.

Mentorship and Network

A cornerstone of the UpTide experience is its robust mentorship and networking framework. Participants receive 1:1 mentorship and coaching from seasoned experts, providing personalized guidance to navigate the complexities of organizational growth. The program also facilitates a powerful and sustained network, connecting cohort peers with mentors, coaches, and industry leaders. This network is actively supported and facilitated by 92NY, ensuring ongoing access to valuable connections and resources. Furthermore, an alumni network, supported by SEED SPOT, offers continued engagement and resource sharing post-program.

Investment Terms

Upon successful completion of all elements of the UpTide accelerator, participating organizations receive a $5,000 unrestricted grant. Beyond this initial funding, organizations have the opportunity to win up to an additional $25,000 in grant funding. This additional funding is awarded based on presentations made at Showcase Day, where leaders pitch their organizations on 92NY's world-class stage. The program focuses on providing grants rather than taking equity.

What Makes It Unique

UpTide stands out due to its specific focus on community-building nonprofits and its direct approach to combating the "Crisis of Community." Its affiliation with 92NY and the Belfer Center provides unparalleled access to a rich network of seasoned board members and industry experts. The program's hybrid format, culminating in a fully sponsored week in New York City, offers a unique blend of virtual flexibility and intensive in-person engagement. The opportunity to secure significant additional grant funding through a high-profile Showcase Day, coupled with expert guidance for crafting pitches, further distinguishes UpTide.

Notable Outcomes

In its inaugural cohort, UpTide successfully served five nonprofit leaders, demonstrating its capacity to support diverse, community-building organizations. The program's emphasis on developing a customized 3-year strategic plan and providing expert guidance for pitch development are designed to lead to tangible outcomes in organizational scaling and impact. The opportunity for additional grant funding through Showcase Day directly contributes to the financial sustainability and growth of participating nonprofits.

What Participants Can Expect Day-to-Day

Participants can expect a dynamic and demanding program. Virtual sessions will involve workshops tailored to the unique challenges of community-building organizations, strategic planning exercises, and collaborative discussions. During the NYC Week, days will be filled with intensive programming, including expert-led sessions, one-on-one meetings with mentors and potential partners, and dedicated time for refining their pitch. The week culminates in Showcase Day, a high-stakes yet rewarding event where leaders present their organizations.
